About Me

Hello! How are you today?

My name is Shan-Yu, a regular 21-year-old college student. Back in high school, I stumbled upon a few popular sociology books, and I was drawn in by the fascinating theories. That’s when I decided to pursue “social sciences” as my major in college.

At 18, I was thrilled to get into the program I wanted. Studying social science gave me a perspective that prioritizes “people-first” and trained me in research methods like “field interviews” and “surveys.” As I encountered more social issues, such as educational inequality, homelessness, migrant worker education, and indigenous communities, a desire to change the world began to grow in my heart.

A year later, I started realizing that my ambitions were high, but my skills were limited. Although I had the passion to make a difference, I lacked the practical skills to do so. At the time, we were witnessing an AI boom that was transforming society in profound ways. Seeing the impact of “technology” on “society” inspired me to double major in “Information Management.”

Last summer, I interned in network management at a government office. The nine-to-five schedule gave me a healthy, steady lifestyle, but it also made me question my career path. I enjoy exploring new places and meeting new people, so the routine felt too flat for me. At the end of the summer, I decided to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, hoping to discover new possibilities and take some time to think deeply about my future.

This year, I am studying in Turkey as an exchange student, while also working three remote part-time jobs. Life in a foreign country, the flexibility of managing my own time, and occasional feelings of homesickness are all unique parts of this journey
